Solar system warranty

What warranty do I get with my PureVolt installation?

Every PureVolt installation comes with a 5-year workmanship warranty, plus the manufacturer's warranty on each piece of equipment we fit, such as your panels, inverter and battery. This page covers:

There are two separate warranties at work, and it helps to know which is which. The workmanship warranty is ours, and it covers the quality of the installation itself. The manufacturer warranties belong to the companies that made the equipment, and they cover the equipment.

What does our workmanship warranty cover?

Our 5-year workmanship warranty starts from the date your installation is completed. Should any issue arise from our installation work during that period, we'll return and put it right at no cost to you.

What is not covered?

The workmanship warranty covers our work. It does not cover everything that can happen to a solar system after it is installed. The following are not covered:

  • Faulty equipment. A defect in a panel, inverter, battery or other component is covered by that manufacturer's warranty, not by our workmanship warranty.
  • Extreme weather. Damage from events such as lightning, flooding or high winds.
  • Vandalism, fire, theft and animal damage. For example, rodents chewing through cabling. These are matters for your home insurance.
  • Power surges and grid faults. Damage caused by voltage fluctuations or faults coming from the electricity network.
  • Unauthorised alterations. Problems caused by repairs, modifications or removals carried out by anyone other than PureVolt. This includes panels being removed and refitted by a third-party roofing contractor.
  • A fault that is left unreported. If you notice a fault or a hazard and do not tell us for a long period, and further damage results, our responsibility is limited to the original defect.
  • New shading. A drop in performance caused by new buildings, extensions or tree growth that shades the panels after installation.
  • Normal wear and tear. This includes cosmetic changes such as discolouration that do not affect how the system performs.

Manufacturer warranties on your equipment

Each piece of equipment carries its own manufacturer's warranty. This is held with the manufacturer and is separate from our workmanship warranty. Typical cover for a domestic solar system is:

EquipmentTypical manufacturer warranty
Solar panels25 years
Inverter5 to 10 years
Battery (if fitted)10 years
Mounting equipment10 to 20 years

These are typical figures and they vary by brand and model. The exact warranty for the equipment on your own system is listed on your quote and in the documents you received at handover.

Some manufacturer warranties are pro-rated. That means the cover reduces as the equipment gets older. For example, a panel that fails late in its warranty period may be covered for a portion of its value rather than the full amount.

Note

Within the first 5 years, our time is covered by our workmanship warranty. If a piece of equipment fails, we'll attend, test it, and take it up with the manufacturer on your behalf, at no charge to you for our time.

The manufacturer carries out its own assessment of the fault and decides whether the part is covered. Once the 5 years have passed, our time and labour becomes chargeable. See what happens after the 5 years below.

What happens after the 5 years?

Once the 5-year workmanship warranty has ended, our time and labour is always chargeable. This applies even when a piece of equipment is still within its manufacturer warranty.

For example, if your inverter fails in year 7, the manufacturer may replace the unit for free under its 10-year warranty. The replacement part costs you nothing, but our labour to remove the old unit and fit the new one is charged at our standard rates.

The 5 years is also the cut-off point for our responsibility for your system. We can still act as the middleman between you and the manufacturer, and help you make a claim.

How do I make a warranty claim?

If you think something is wrong with your system, contact us at service@purevolt.ie. It helps if you can include:

  • A description of the problem.
  • Photos, if you're able to take them.

We'll arrange a site inspection at the earliest time that suits you. Safety-critical issues, and faults that have taken the system offline, are treated as a priority. Other issues are scheduled as soon as we can.

If the problem is covered by the workmanship warranty, we repair or reinstall the affected parts at no cost to you. For roofing damage, we carry out the repair ourselves or arrange for a certified roofing contractor to do it.

Can I transfer the warranty if I sell my home?

Yes. The workmanship warranty can be transferred to a new owner if you let us know within 30 days of the ownership changing. The new owner needs to accept the original terms of the warranty.

What are my responsibilities?

To keep your warranty valid, you need to:

  • Keep up with the maintenance recommended by the manufacturer and by us.
  • Avoid repairs, modifications or interference by anyone else.
  • Follow the operating guidelines we gave you for your system.
  • Report any faults, hazards or suspected defects to us promptly.
  • Make sure third-party contractors, such as roofers or chimney contractors, do not walk on or disturb the system without arranging it with us first.

If a fault is left unaddressed for a long period and further damage results, our responsibility is limited to the original defect. See our terms and conditions for the full formal wording.
