The enhanced SEAI solar grant is worth up to €9,000 for social welfare recipients: €8,400 towards solar panels, and €600 towards a battery of 5kWh or larger.
The enhanced rate is not a separate scheme. It is the same SEAI domestic solar grant at a higher level, and it is open to homeowners receiving one of a set list of Department of Social Protection (DSP) payments. The standard domestic grant, by comparison, is worth up to €2,400.
This page explains who qualifies, how much the enhanced rate is worth, and how it compares with the standard domestic solar grant. The amounts shown are the 2026 figures.
The enhanced rate is not a separate scheme. It is a higher level of support within the same SEAI domestic solar grant, and it is open to homeowners who are receiving one of a set list of Department of Social Protection payments.
A homeowner qualifies for the enhanced rate if they are receiving one or more of the following Department of Social Protection payments:
Some of these have a condition attached, so it is worth reading the entry itself rather than just checking that the payment name matches. The list is maintained by the SEAI on its own page: homeowners in receipt of certain Department of Social Protection payments .
Yes. The enhanced rate sits on top of the normal scheme, so you still have to meet the standard eligibility rules. In short: you must own and live in the property, the property must have been built and occupied before 2025, and the work must be carried out by an SEAI registered installer.
As with the standard grant, no work can start and no materials can be bought until your grant offer is in place.
The enhanced rate lifts the solar panel element of the grant substantially, while the battery element stays the same as the standard grant.
| Element | Enhanced grant value |
|---|---|
| Solar panels | Up to €8,400 for a 4kWp system |
| Battery storage | €600 for a 5kWh battery storage system |
| Maximum combined | Up to €9,000 |
The enhanced solar panel support is capped at a 4kWp system, the same ceiling as the standard grant. A battery must be 5kWh or larger to attract the €600, and a battery smaller than 5kWh does not qualify.
No. Only the solar panel element is enhanced. The battery grant is unchanged: it is the same flat €600 that applies to the standard grant, and it is claimed in the same way.
Batteries now have a grant of their own. Since the 6th of October 2026, the SEAI pays a separate flat €600 towards any home battery of 5kWh or larger. A battery smaller than 5kWh does not qualify, and neither do immersion diverters or other add-ons.
Both grants use the same rule on the age of the home: your home must have been built and occupied before 2025. That applies to the solar panel grant and to the €600 battery grant alike.
If you are installing the panels and the battery together, both grants are claimed on the one application. Either way, the work cannot start until your grant offer is in place.
If your solar panel application is already with SEAI and you want to add a battery, you do not need to amend the existing application. You submit a new application for the battery grant by logging into the SEAI portal . The same works in reverse: if you have already claimed one of the two grants, you can apply for the other at a later date, as long as you still meet the eligibility rules at that point.
The timing rule catches people out, so it is worth repeating here. SEAI cannot accept an application for an installation that has already started. If the battery is fitted before your grant offer arrives, there is no grant for it.
Enter your system size to see what the enhanced rate is worth.
The quicker way to see the difference is side by side. Both columns below use the same eligibility rules and the same application process. The only thing that changes is the amount of support.
| Element | Standard domestic grant | Enhanced grant |
|---|---|---|
| Solar panels | Up to €1,800 (capped at 4kWp) | Up to €8,400 (capped at 4kWp) |
| Battery storage | €600 (5kWh or larger) | €600 (5kWh or larger) |
| Maximum combined | €2,400 | €9,000 |
| Who it is for | Private homeowners | Private homeowners receiving certain DSP payments |
The standard rates shown above are the current SEAI domestic rates. You can work out what a standard system would attract using our SEAI solar grant calculator, or read the full breakdown on our 2026 solar grants guide.
The application is the same one as the standard domestic solar grant. You apply once, on the SEAI portal , and the enhanced rate applies on top because of the payment you are receiving.
You make the application yourself, in your own name. SEAI does not accept grant applications from installers or from any other company, and a registered installer cannot lodge it for you. What we can do is take you through it: our SEAI Solar PV Grant Application Guide walks through the whole portal, screen by screen.
Once the system is installed and commissioned, we send our completion paperwork into the SEAI, to confirm that the work was carried out by an SEAI registered installer. You also need a post-works BER certificate for the improved rating of the home. Payment is made by electronic fund transfer to the account nominated on the application, normally around 6 weeks after SEAI receives confirmation that the works are complete.
These are the questions we are asked most often about the enhanced rate. If your own situation is not covered here, drop us a line and we will talk it through with you. You can also read the SEAI's own guidance on grants for homeowners in receipt of certain DSP payments .
You qualify if you are receiving one of the seven Department of Social Protection payments on the list above. Three of them carry a condition, so check your payment against the entry rather than the name alone.
The standard grant rules still apply too: you must own and live in the property, and the property must have been built and occupied before 2025.
The enhanced grant is made up of the same two grants as the standard domestic solar grant. The solar panel part is worth much more:
Add the two together and the maximum is €9,000. The same system on the standard domestic grant would attract €1,800 plus €600.
No. You apply first, and no work can start until your grant offer has arrived.
Once the system is installed and your post-works BER certificate is uploaded, the SEAI processes the payment. The money is paid straight into the bank account you gave on the application, by electronic funds transfer.
Our SEAI solar PV grant application guide walks through the whole process, screen by screen.
No. You apply on the SEAI portal , using your MPRN, in exactly the same way as the standard domestic solar grant. There is no separate welfare application to fill in.
Do one thing first though. Tell your PureVolt engineer before you apply, so your quote is set up for the enhanced tier from the start.
SEAI cannot accept an application for an installation that has already started, so there would be no grant for it.
The same rule applies to the battery. If the battery is fitted before your grant offer arrives, there is no grant for it either.
Wait for the grant offer before any work begins. The timing rules for both grants are set out above.
No. The SEAI Warmer Homes Scheme offers fully funded, free-of-charge energy upgrades, but wait times can currently be up to 15 months and you cannot choose your specific system size.
The enhanced solar PV grant is for homeowners who want to start immediately. You choose your own SEAI registered contractor (like PureVolt), pick your exact solar system, and get immediate grant approval without the long wait.
Based on your Eircode and a few other bits of information from you, we will send you a free initial quote and design proposal. Using satellite imagery of your house, we can generate a pretty accurate design including price, electricity production forecasts, what grant you might get and how long it will take for your PV system to pay for itself. All we need from you is this quick and easy form.
The next step is for one of our engineers to come and view your property. They will discuss everything with you in detail, and will inspect everything from your roof to your electrics. Based on this, we may make some improvements to your design to make sure it fits your exact needs.
Within a day or two, we will send you a full system design proposal along with a finalised quote. Your solar engineer will follow up to go through everything with you and answer any questions you may have.
